  • Maurice Richard joined the Canadiens in 1942-32 under coach Dick Irvin.
  • Scored three hat tricks in the Stanley Cup finals in his career, setting an NHL record.
  • By the age of 21 Maurice "Rocket" Richard had already broken his left ankle, left wrist and badly fractured his right ankle in NHL action. During the time he was sidelined with the ankle injury, Richard questioned his future in the NHL and contemplated quitting to work as a machinist for which he had been trained in technical school.
  • Rocket Richard played on one of the most dangerous lines the game has ever seen consisting on himself, Elmer Lach and Toe Blake. The line was known as "The Punch Line"
  • In 1944-45, Rocket lit up the league and set an NHL record by scoring fifty goals in fifty games. The record would stand for 36 seasons until Mike Bossy tied it in 1980-81.
  • Legend has it that when Maurice Richard joined the Canadiens he only knew two words of english "yes" and "no".
  • On December 28,1944 the Rocket scored 8 points in a single game. This mark remained intact until Darryl Sittler beat it with 10 points in 1976.
  • To french canadians Richard was an icon, and when the Rocket was ejected for the remainder of the season and the playoffs for hitting an official the city went crazy. Fans rioted in the streets of downtown Monteal in protest in what has gone down in history as "the Richard Riot".
  • His six playoff game winning overtime goals was another record for Richard and more evidence that in the big games Richard would always rise to the challenge.
  • Richard was known for his incredible backhand. In fact, its been said that probably close to half the 544 career goals Maurice scored were on the backhand.
  • Rocket Richard was a right winger who shot left handed, who used his great strength to strong arm when cutting to the center of the net from the right side and then whipping the puck behind the netminder.
  • Richard won 8 Stanley Cups with Montreal over the course of his 18 year career.
  • The mandatory three year waiting period was waived and in 1961 Maurice Rocket Richard was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
  • In 1998, the NHL board of Governors announced that a new award would be presented annually in honour of Rocket Richard. The Rocket Richard trophy would go to the player who led the league in scoring.
  • May 27,2000 Maurice Rocket Richard died of cancer.
